Creative Jazz Workshop July 22nd 2017

First collaborative event from BlueJam/Cumbria Music Hub and Lancashire Music Service at Ripley School Lancaster, today. 16 young players from Cumbria and Lancashire got together to explore some jazz approaches and apply them to their own sound.

Jilly Jarman led the day with Tom Leah providing studio composition techniques and Cath Sewell and Sylvie Heath wind and brass support.

We had 4 altos, tuba, trombone, 2 trumpets, 3 keyboards, 2 basses, 2 drums, and guitar.

We used Ole Baby by Mocean Worker as a warm up and to demonstrate soloing with the Kaos pad, then broke up into self-managed groups to experiment with arrangements of Driftin’ by Herbie Hancock. This led to 4 really exciting versions of the piece.

We finished off the day looking at soloing techniques and ways of ‘freeing up’ Equinox by John Coltrane.

Looking forward to the next one on October 7th.
